Who is Ashmodi?

There are several answers to this question. First, we will deal with the name itself and then list
some of the associated traits stories and events surrounding or involving Ashmodi. Ashmodi is also known
as Ashmedai, Ashmedon, Shamdon, Satan, Sammael, King of the Demon, King of the Shedim, or Asmodeus.
Ashmodi holds a very special place in our collective mythologies/ religion. He is the cross-section of
the Christianic Satan and the Jewish lord of the Shedim. It is very possble that many of the Christianic, Medieval,
and modern representations of Satan come from early Rabbinic and Kabbalistic descriptions and tales of Ashmodi.
According to Kabbalah, Ashmodi is the lord of the Shedim. Shedim are the Jewish concept of demons. They exist
just outside our normal perception and have various influences on us day to day. There are stories in the Talmud
and other early Rabbinic references that detail human contact with Shedim and some that even detail contact with
Ashmodi himself (the Story of King Solomon and the Stone Cutting Worm). In the Talmud (Brachos Chapter 9 Sukah 5)
there are kabbalistic methods described, and warnings given, about how to contact or see Shedim. It is also there
that we learn of the King of The Shedim and his role with the Shedim. The Shedim and Ashmodi were created on the
eve of the 6th day of creation. These are not the Fallen Angels or Nephalim mention in Genisis. It is important to
note that according to Rabbninic and Kabbalistic tradition Ashmodi and the Shedim are not Fallen Angels and are
not apart of any war with God or the Heavenly host. Rather they exist much like humans and animals do, here on
Earth and are part of the overall Master Plan; similar to the Leviathan and Behemoth traditions.
In Christianic tradition, Ashmodi is another name for Satan. Thus there is a severe fork in the tradition
between Judaism and Christianity. It is, again, likely that the Christian descriptions for Satan are based solely
on those attributed to Ashmodi. Some Christian philosophers list Ashmodi as a member of Lucifer's court as a fallen
angel under Lucifer's command who is in charge of hell's casinos.
The above information is to stimulate the individual to go and research these traditions further and is in no
way meant to influence or ascribe any correctness to itself. In other words the above is my opinion based on research
of the texts that I have done. Please feel free to do your own research and come up with your own conclusions. I
welcome comments and pointers to new [or really old:) ] texts and resources on the subject.
